With the draw of Europe's premier natural attraction, Mont Blanc, Chamonix never sleeps. Whether it's simply to soak up the stunning scenery or get the adrenaline pumping, there is plenty for everybody to during the summer. Chamonix has a reputation for the 'extreme', but there are levels in all activities to suit everybody's needs. Here are some suggestions - some we have experienced ourselves.
Rock climbing
There is everything from low level valley cragging in Les Gaillands (10 minute walk from the town centre) to high level bolted and traditional routes.
Mountaineering
Chamonix is the mountaineering capital of the world, but it is easy to escape the crowds unless the summit in question is Mont Blanc.
Watersports
White water rafting and hydro speeding are possible on the River Arve which flows through Chamonix. If you fancy a swim there is a 50m pool or lower down the valley have a BBQ and a dip at Lake Passy.
Cycling
For single track there are plenty of dedicated trails in the valley with some lift access. For the road, a trip over the Col de Montets, Col de Forclaz and down to Martigny in Switzerland is great.
Mountain trains & Cable cars
The Aiguille du Midi is the highest cable car in the world, and only one minute from the front door! It's an awe inspiring journey from Chamonix town centre up to 3800m. Even more spectacular is the Helbronner lift which stretches across the glaciers into Italy. The Montenvers train is another beautiful journey up to the Mer de Glace from where you can admire the Drus, the Jorasses and the Aiguille Verte mountains.
Hiking
There are a wide variety of clearly marked low and mid level trails. Some of the ski lifts can also be used to assist in gaining height. For example, the Flegere cable car to walk to Lac Blanc (and the hut which serves lunch!)
